Introducing the Sunny Side of Social Media
For those of you who aren’t SoCal natives, this time of year is best known as June Gloom. It’s a dreaded weather phenomenon that makes our coastal regions cooler and more moist than we’d prefer. So even though the beaches are calling, that stubborn marine layer is keeping us all bundled up!
The medical aesthetics industry faces a similar June Gloom. Business forecasts often point to a slow summer season, especially during election years like this one. Consumer behaviors just aren’t the same as they used to be; Consumer Price Inflation has risen almost 20% since pre-pandemic days, giving precedence to groceries, gas, and other necessities—and making it a lot easier to consider some business costs (like marketing) “frivolous” or easily dispensed with.
Summer is a slow time for most practices, but there’s a HUGE upside to utilizing social media to overcome low sales or sluggish patient traffic. That’s why we’ve launched our new campaign, The Sunny Side of Social Media! Apps like Instagram and TikTok have taken a turn for the worse, with the general consensus being that they’re nothing but a time-suck, detrimental to mental health, and toxic in their unrealistic glimpses into people’s lives.… Perhaps, but peel back the clouds, and there’s a myriad of positive aspects to SM that make it worth your business’s while!
It’s FREE.
Social media is one of the few things that you can actually join for free these days, and with a bit of elbow grease, you can stretch that $0 for miles. Unlike a website domain or business email, you can create a profile for your med spa or dermatology office completely cost-free! The only “price” will be intentionally spent time and effort to see results, but even uploading 1–2 quality posts per week can help establish your digital presence and give prospective patients the insight into your business that they’re looking for. Some low-hanging fruit? Treatment before and afters, a team member’s Day in the Life (DITL), or answering some FAQs!
*If you opt to run Instagram ads, it will cost you to reach niche audiences or see higher engagement rates.
Social media expands your reach and builds your community.
“What’s great about social media is it’s a great tool for businesses to be able to create communities that they might not have ever met with or created with before,” says MeyCo Marketing founder and CEO Catherine White. By joining online conversations and even hopping on a trend or two, your company can avoid being geographically minimized.
Social media has always been a place to connect, whether that be with other industry peers, new patients, or the next office to add your aesthetics device to their arsenal. While it’s important to unplug every so often, don’t live under a rock! Be sure you’re always in the know, sharing and gaining knowledge within your circle, leveraging training opportunities, and more!
Purchasing power is more important than ever.
In a December 2023 report by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, officials credit “rising real wages (wages adjusted for inflation) and rising employment” for the increase in American purchasing power. With “an additional $1,000 to spend or save,” Americans have an extra grand to spend on aesthetic treatments or devices! So use social media—a FREE marketing platform—to promo savings that will give consumers the best bang for their buck and give you the best financial gain for your business.
It’s the new search engine!
Is Google your go-to? For a whopping 40% of online consumers, it’s not. They’ve turned to Instagram and TikTok to find everything from the best Italian restaurants near them to the differences between chemical and mineral sunscreens. But don’t panic if your follower count isn’t in the millions or if your profile is completely nonexistent. Today’s consumers value authenticity and education, so use your little slice of the internet to “showcase who you are and market what you do in your business,” says Catherine. Your followers want to get to know and trust you!
Experts are also speculating that follower count may not hold the same weight that it used to. After all, a few engaged followers are worth more than millions of inactive ones. So focus on quality, quality, quality!
We won’t argue that social media can’t be a time-suck or that excessive use can’t have its repercussions, but that’s what focus modes and the MeyCo team are for! There are tools out there to help you optimize your social media professionally, like ready-made marketing content. When used wisely, social media can be a HUGE asset for businesses across the board.
